General Information

Over the past 15 years, we have seen the use of Permeable Reactive Barrier technology for the remediation of contaminated groundwater go from strength to strength. Developments in this technology have made PRBs applicable to the treatment of most contaminants found in groundwater. Evidence of this can be seen in the worldwide application of this technology, from North America to Europe, Africa and the far east. The range of materials currently employed as reactive media in PRBs has also increased dramatically since the introduction of granular iron in the early 90’s, with both abiotic and biotically mediated processes commonly in practice.

PRB-Net, in conjunction with the Environment Agency of England and Wales, would like to introduce this symposium as a forum where experts and novices in the field of groundwater remediation from around the world can exchange knowledge about PRB technology and forge new collaborations. We are hoping to bring together pioneers and experts in this field to present their latest results and viewpoints on this technology in a format which allows for discussion and knowledge exchange.

Topic Researchers, consultants, regulators, problem-holders, vendors, academics! If you feel that knowing more about this technology will benefit yourself or your organisation, this symposium will provide something for everybody, from the specialist to the novice. The term PRB in the context of this symposium may describe the classical funnel-and-gate or continuous trench PRB. However, we are interested in all reactive zone technologies including biobarriers, air sparge curtains and soil mixed systems, specifically relating to the following areas:

  • Site investigation
  • Laboratory scale studies
  • Modelling of PRBs
  • Field experience
  • Design of PRBs
  • Novel reactive media
  • Supplements for PRBs
  • Installation and construction
  • Longevity issues
  • Advances in monitoring
  • Legislation
  • Financial issues
  • Decomissioning strategies
  • PRBs for city environments

Special sessions

  • US EPA Funded session: The US EPA will be hosting a special session entitled "New Developments in PRB Technology Application and Performance Assessment in North America". This session will be open to all delegates.
  • Environment Agency of England and Wales funded session: The EA will be funding a session on "bigger picture issues" relating to the economics and residual liability of PRBs in context of current environmental legislation and marquee hire
